What is an anal fissure? Anal fissures are small tears in the lining of the anal canal. While they are harmless and do not cause any other damage, they can cause excruciating pain any time you have a bowel movement. These tiny tears are very common – they affect people of all ages, from infancy to adulthood. Men and women are equally likely to experience this painful problem.

How are anal fissures formed? An anal fissure can occur when you have a hard or larger-than normal bowel movement. Constipation is often a contributing factor, but recurring diarrhea can cause anal fissures as well.

What are the signs of an anal fissure? The most common indicator of a tear in the anal canal is a sharp, burning sensation during defecation. The pain can last for several hours, and it may be a deterrent for further bowel movements. Itching is also normal, and you may see small droplets of blood in the toilet. As long as the blood is bright red, it is because of the anal fissure, not a more serious bleeding issue.

Do I need medical treatment for anal fissures? Your doctor can easily tell if you have an anal fissure via a visual inspection. Treatment is not always necessary, but pain relief from the burning of anal tears may be urgently needed. Your physician may recommend a sitz bath (a shallow-water bath to soak the affected area) to calm the burning sensation. Ointments applied to the area may also take away some of the discomfort of an anal fissure. In some extreme cases, surgery may be required to stop the spasm in the anal canal which is responsible for the formation of the tear.
